Saving Your Voice from Spring Allergies

voice prompts

It’s April and it’s safe to say spring weather is officially in the swing of things! The flowers are bright and blooming, the pollen is popping, and (if you’re anything like us) your allergies just can’t seem to catch a break. However, just because it’s spring outside doesn’t mean voiceover work goes on hold. There’s still plenty of voice prompts to record! We’ve compiled a list of all our best remedies to keep your voice ready for recording, and your seasonal allergies at bay when you arrive in the booth.

1. Water is Everything

We know, we know. This one feels self-explanatory when it comes to keeping your immune system strong, but trust us when we say the more water you drink the better your voice will be. Adding a humidifier to your home works wonders as well! Plugging one in each night helps repair some of the damage and dry-out that occurs with many over the counter allergy medications. And last, but certainly not least, we can’t be remiss to include taking a hot shower every day to let the steam break up some of the congestion in your lungs. Along with drinking TONS of water and a hefty humidifier, these are three fail-proof ways to make sure your voice is feeling (and sounding) its best every day during allergy season.

2. Herbs! Herbs! Herbs!

Water is most definitely life here at Worldly Voices, but we can’t forget to include the secret ingredients that transform water into a magic elixir that gets us through the season: fresh herbs! Many herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that can help with puffiness and sinus congestion. And they make great teas to boot! Some of our favorite herbs to use in hot teas include: goldenrod, stinging nettle leaf, rosemary, and turmeric. Drizzle in some local honey to sweeten the herbs up once the tea is nice and hot and you got yourself a seasonal cure!

3. Rest Your Voice

Our last bit of advice is definitely the hardest to maintain on the list: resting your voice. As a professional voiceover studio, we know how hard it is to stay away from the booth. So hard! However, this time of year it’s especially important to rest your voice between voiceover jobs. This means not talking on the phone as much, not going to concerts and yelling over one another, and for the love of God…no woo-hooing! Your voice is your instrument and you only get one. Once a certain amount of damage is done, there’s no going back. Allergies can wreak havoc on our voices this time of year, but taking the necessary precaution of giving it some extra rest offsets the damage done by seasonal allergies. Plus, we can all use a little extra rest these days no matter what it is!
